How to choose self storage in Poland without paying for space you do not need

Published: · SpaceAtlas

When a moving date is approaching, it is tempting to book the first available unit with a low advertised price. The problems often appear later: the drive takes longer than expected, access ends before you finish work, or a wardrobe will not fit through the door. A few checks before booking can save a difficult move.

Start with what you need to store

Make a list of large items and measure anything that cannot be dismantled. Floor area is only part of the picture. You also need enough height, a suitable doorway and a workable route from your vehicle to the unit. If you plan to collect individual items during the rental, leave room to reach the boxes. A tightly packed unit for a house move needs a different layout from storage used by an online shop.

Check the journey you will actually make

A facility near a motorway junction may suit a single van delivery but be inconvenient for frequent visits without a car. Look at the exact entrance, parking and unloading arrangements. Ask whether a van can stop close to the building and whether there is cover from the rain. For an upstairs unit, check the dimensions of the goods lift rather than assuming it can carry your largest piece of furniture.

Separate unit access from office hours

A reference to round-the-clock monitoring does not establish round-the-clock access. Confirm when you can enter the site, reach your unit and speak to a member of staff. Ask how you receive a key or code and whether the first visit needs an appointment. If you are moving at the weekend, make those arrangements before booking transport.

Request a complete quote for a specific unit

An advertised starting price may refer to a locker, a particular rental term or an introductory offer. Give the operator your required size, start date and expected rental period. Ask for the initial payment and the normal charge after any promotion. Check VAT, insurance, deposits, locks and administration fees separately. A refundable deposit affects the money you need at the start, even if it is not ultimately part of the rental cost.

Inspect the unit and check how the agreement ends

Look at the condition of the space and ask about ventilation and any restrictions relevant to your belongings. Check the notice period, how cancellation must be submitted and the rules for returning keys. If you do not read Polish comfortably, ask for an explanation of the agreement before signing. Use SpaceAtlas to compare specific locations, then confirm availability and the final terms directly with the operator.
